Live the healthier way

If you've been diagnosed with diabetes, it is better for you to get a doctor or a registered dietitian to assesses the nutritional needs and calculates the amounts of carbohydrate, fat, protein, and total calories needed per day.

There actually isn't any diet for diabetes, but people with diabetes should follow the nutrition guidelines in the Diabetic Food Pyramid, while paying special attention to carbohydrate intake. Diabetic should also eat about the same amount of food at the same time each day to keep blood sugar levels stable.

The list below is by no means exhaustive. It is here to help you to decide a healthy meal to manage your condition.

  • Eat a variety of foods as recommended in the Diabetes Food Pyramid to get a balanced intake of the nutrients your body needs.

  • Select food that are low GI (Glycemic Index) as these foods can lower the demand for insulin and can improve insulin sensitivity.

  • Eat more fiber. Fiber is capable of slowing down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrate and increasing the sensitivity of tissues to insulin, thereby preventing rises in blood sugar.

  • Reduce the amount of fat you eat by choosing fewer high-fat foods and cooking with less fat.

  • Eat fewer foods that are high in sugar like fruit juices, fruit-flavored drinks, sodas, and tea or coffee sweetened with sugar.

  • Use less salt in cooking and at the table. Eat fewer high sodium food like salty fish, canned and packaged soups, pickles, and processed meat.

  • Eat smaller portions and never skip meals.

  • Limit use of alcohol. Higher quantities alcohol can cause health problems like liver damage and increase the risk of heart disease.
